Family Council

We value the vital role that family relationships play in the lives of the Residents who live in the Odd Fellow and Rebekah Long-Term Care Home. In September 2004 a Home Family Council was established at the IOOF Home. The Home Family Council meets monthly and recesses in the summer months of July and August. The Council’s main purpose is to act in an advisory capacity and facilitate effective communication among Residents, family, management and the staff of the Home and to act as a forum to support and promote Residents rights, autonomy and Resident family participation in the decision making process. The President of the Home Family Council sits on the Resident Services Committee of the Board.

The Family Council hosts guest speakers and topics have varied from, care giver support, Alzheimer’s & Related Dementias, Food and Nutrition service to the latest in geriatric medication.

We encourage all families to become involved.

The Family Council works with the home's staff to enrich the environment and quality of life for their family members who live in the home.

By virtue of having a loved one residing in the home, you are considered family and you are more than welcome to attend Family Council meetings. We define family as the "family of origin or the family of choice" recognizing that these special relationships provide support and nurturance and are both significant and unique for Residents.

Similar to Residents' Council meetings, the Family Council is provided with support from the home to form, organize and maintain administrative matters as required. The Family Council meets on a regular schedule throughout the year.

The Family Council is chaired by a representative chosen from the family members themselves.

We understand and foster an environment built on true partnerships with family members in providing the best care possible.

Contacting your Family Council:

We recognize that some family members may be uncomfortable raising an ideas, issue or concern at a Family Council meeting or may be unable to attend meetings due to other obligations. Alternatives are available. We encourage you to speak with a Family Council representative. Our managers all have "open door" policies - feel free to drop in. We are here to help.
